Interview With Mariana Valverde: Quayside Toronto

Mariana Valverde is a Professor at the Centre for Criminology and Sociolegal Studies at the University of Toronto. This interview discusses the Sidewalk Labs / Waterfront Toronto Smart City project and focuses particularly on the governance aspects of the project. Mariana argues that the existing governance arrangements for project governance, control of the data that it gathers and protections for privacy of residents and other users of the new community are inadequate and require urgent attention.

While believing that information technology can be applied in positive ways for improving the lives of people in cities, Mariana questions whether Alphabet’s Sidewalk Labs are an appropriate partner for Waterfront Toronto’s efforts to create a Smart City community.
